Health Policy and Management Department Head

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) invites applications for a Department Head for Fall 2019 for a 9-month, faculty appointment at the Tenure-Track or Tenure on Arrival at the Associate or Professor level with 12-month administrative supplement. This position requires tenure-eligible candidates with strong leadership skills and a record of innovation in education, research, and service that can build on strong educational programs, and a strong research faculty.

About the Department

Administratively located in the CEPH-accredited School of Public Health (SPH), the department offers the Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Public Health (MPH), PhD in Health Service Research, and undergraduate BSPH degree programs. Both SPH and the CAHME-accredited MHA program are nationally ranked. Texas A&M University was recently ranked in the top 15 public universities by U.S. News and World Report.

The department has 20 full-time faculty and a number of instructional adjunct faculty members and an Executive-in-Residence, provides leadership to Regents’ approved centers and programs:

  • The NSF-funded Center for Health Organization Transformation
  • The HRSA-funded Southwest Rural Health Research Center
  • The Program on Health Policy Research
  • The Program on Disability Research and Community-Based Care

Qualifications

This position requires a PhD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution in public health or a related field such as: administration, management, health services research, economics, law and policy, or medicine; demonstrated record of research and scholarly work in health services management and policy; previous academic administrative experience; and highly effective interpersonal skills. Additional qualifications include a record of mentoring faculty in research and teaching development; experience with innovative educational approaches and linkages to health organizations and/or state and federal agencies, and ties with major professional associations in health policy and management. Qualifications include a graduate degree in public health or public health experience.

Duties:

  • Providing direction and leadership and carrying out administrative responsibilities for departmental faculty, staff, and graduate programs.
  • Managing departmental budgets, personnel management, and supervision of direct reports.
  • Serves on the School of Public Health (SPH) Executive Committee.
  • Officiates department faculty meetings.
  • Represents the department in areas of research and academic endeavors.
  • Attend Meetings
  • Maintains membership appropriate to the department disciplines.

The Department Head will maintain a research and teaching load the meets SPH expectations. Continuation of an active research program including collaboration with other faculty, a clear commitment to students, and promoting a professional and collegial environment is expected.
